There is a universal desire to appear beautiful. In the realm of nature, we have arbitrarily defined certain things as beautiful and others as not. However, beauty is not something created by humans. What humans can do is conceal ugliness. People in the film industry—and others as well—often wear makeup; essentially, this serves to hide their imperfections.
Wearing makeup is a matter of personal freedom. However, it is a misconception to believe that one appears beautiful solely because of it.
Consider a young woman suffering from severe diabetes; the effects of this condition are evident in her eyes and throughout her body. No matter how much makeup she applies, it is unlikely she will appear beautiful. Conversely, young people in the prime of their youth often look beautiful even without any makeup. Why is this? Because during their youth, they are healthy. Health is beauty. And “health” here refers to more than just physical well-being; it encompasses psychological health, body language, and the very way one looks at the world through their eyes—all of which constitute psychological health.
Then there is social health: if a person is constantly being criticised or shunned by society, they will naturally lack self-confidence. Furthermore, there is intellectual health and cultural health.
It is when we cultivate and develop all these various dimensions of health that we truly appear beautiful. It is not merely about applying makeup to one’s face. Nor is it simply about undergoing cosmetic surgery on the nose or face. Such things may work in the world of cinema—but cinema represents only one side of the coin. When you meet these individuals in real life, they do not appear that way.
True beauty is synonymous with good health. One cannot expect to look beautiful simply by applying various creams to the face.
What, then, does it mean to be beautiful? It means being healthy. Even animals that are in good health appear beautiful; little calves, puppies, and even piglets look beautiful. Indeed, any living creature that is healthy appears beautiful.
Therefore, one should strive to cultivate good health—specifically through physical exercise and by developing one’s psychological well-being.
